November is National Family Caregivers Month.
Who are taken care of in a family?
I’m talking about family caregivers — primarily wives and daughters, but also partners, siblings, husbands, sons, grandparents and sometimes young children — who by choice or necessity assume the responsibility of caring for loved ones for months, years or even decades.
What is National Family Caregivers Month?
Celebrated every November, National Family Caregivers Month (NFCM) is a time to recognize and honor family caregivers across the country. It offers an opportunity to raise awareness of caregiving issues, educate communities, and increase support for caregivers.
Why should we take care of family?
The greatest gifts parents give children is nurturing and caring for them as they grow into adults. The family caregiver feels happiness in being able to help as well as sadness in watching a parent’s health decline.

National Caregivers Day is Friday, February 19, and NAHC is urging everyone in home health, home care, and hospice to use the occasion to draw attention to the selfless work caregivers do all over the country.

How do you take care of yourself in your family?
You should try to
- Rest often and eat well.
- Keep a manageable schedule.
- Get as much physical activity as possible.
- Accept help from others – Wouldn’t you help them?
- Give someone a hug – touching is very important.
- Think about the coping skills you have used at other difficult times, and use them now.
How do you take care of a loved one at home?
Caring for Yourself
- Get help. If friends, neighbors, or family offer to help, say yes and be specific about what they can do.
- Take a break at least once a day. Read a book, go for a walk, or meditate.
- Take care of your own health. Schedule regular checkups.
- Get support from other caregivers.
What every caregiver should know?
Take good care of yourself. Eat healthfully and try to get enough sleep and maintain a balance in your own life. Exercise. Whether it’s exercising, reading, watching TV or even talking on the phone, do whatever helps you to reduce the stress. Recognize signs of caregiver ‘burnout’ including insomnia and exhaustion.
